How Can I Know God's Will?

How many times have you faced a circumstance and found yourself asking "What's the will of God in this matter?"  How many times have you heard people ask, "How can I know the will of God?"  I've been there and I'm sure many others have, also.

We may know the general will of God for our lives; our "calling".  I know, for example, that God's will for me is to teach His Word to His people.  But it's the little or not so little decisions we make on a daily basis that present the problem of knowing the will of God.  Should I buy a car this year or wait a while?  Is this the house God wants for us?  Should we live in Washington or Arizona?  Should I go to school or get a job?  Is this man or woman God's choice for my life?

Most pastors and teachers I have heard in 61 years have answered the question "How can I know the will of God?" in the time-honored, traditional way:  "Read the Bible!  God's will is revealed in the Word!"

Now, that's not necessarily the wrong answer.  In many circumstances it is the right answer.  But, I ask you!  Will reading the bible, in and of itself, tell you to buy the new Buick Roadmaster instead of the pre-owned Cadillac Coupe De Ville?  Will the Bible tell you which of three possible job offers to accept?  Reading the word, on a regular consisent basis, especially coupled with prayer, will condition you rmind and spirit to know the will of God but it will not, in most such matters, give you direct revelation.

That's why God says, "And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left." (Isaiah 30:21)  When you were born again, a new creature was brought into being within you.  Paul calls him the "new" or "inner" man.  I call him the "Spiritual Man".  According to Colossians 1:27, He is Christ being formed within you.  The Spiritual Man is made in the image of God and shares God's nature (2 Peter 1:4).  The natural man, your soul, spirit and body, is of this earth, earthly.  The Spiritual Man is born from above - a child of God by birth and an heir by adoption.

Paul says we can know the will of God by the renewing of our minds.  The secret is to let the Spiritual Man, who knows the mind of God, control our thought life.  His is the voice we hear saying, "This is the way; this is the car; this is the house; this is the girl."  We often discount that voice, thinking it is just our own desires or, perhaps, Satan trying to trick us.

(To see a more in depth study of the Spiritual Man, his origin, birth, growth, etc.,, see The Story of the Spiritual Man.)

Romans 12:2 gives us the answer:  "be not conformed to this world" - don't let the natural man do your thinking because he is a corrupted creature of the world and only knows the ways and wisdom of this world, summed up in "I'll do it my way!".

"But be transformed by the renewing of your minds".  If, in company with reading the Bible and prayer (the food and drink of the Spiritual Man), we listen to that voice within, our thoughts will be more on the spiritual ramifications of the decisions we must make, our whole intellecutal capacity will be transformed from earthly to heavenly, from natural to spiritual.

"That you may prove"; that is, substantiate by your life and experience.

"What is that good, acceptable and perfect will of God."  Oops.  Up to this point, everything has been in sync but here is where we run into problems understanding the word.  I have heard it said that this verse teaches there are as many as three wills of God:  "Good", meaning "okay" but not great; "Acceptable", meaning "permissive"; "Perfect", meaning this is what God really wanted you to do but you messed it up and now God has to settle for either the "good" or "acceptable".  After all, half a loaf is better than no bread at all.

POPPYCOCK AND HORSERADISH!

Mark it Down!  Remember it!  God has always had only one will for you, formulated before you were born, and He has not changed His mind!

So, what does Paul mean, "the good, and acceptable and perfect will of God"?  There must be an explanation if there is only one will.  We can find it in the Word of God.

"Good" (Jer 29:11).  God's will for us, in any situation, is for our good and never will mean anything but good for us, even if it means pain, suffering and the loss of everything we hold dear.  It will always be for our good in God's good time.

"Acceptable"  (Matt 26:39,42)  If I am God's child and if I know His will for me is good, regardless of the cost or circumstances, then I can "accept" it in full faith and confidence.  My Father will never let those who place their trust in Him be confounded or ashamed.

"Perfect" here is the Greek word Teleios, meaning "complete" (Jas 1:4).  God's will is not only good for me but if I fully accept it I will find it is totally complete, lacking nothing.  There is no loop hole or happenstance.  There will be no accidents or surprises,  I will know that when it is all over with, God anticipated every circumstance, foresaw every turn in the road, accounted for every gale and storm, and the map of His will for me was complete, down to the last "jot and tittle".  Nothing was overlooked and everything has worked out for my good.

All I need to do is consciously, all day, everyday, let the spiritual man's voice tell me which way to go and what to do.  That is the only way I will walk in the will of God 24 hours a day and it is the only way to total peace of mind.

Try it and God Bless you.
