Is My Bible the Real Bible?

PSALMS 12:6-7
The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.   You shall keep them, O Lord, you shall preserve them from this generation forever."

There are a lot of versions, translations and paraphrases of the Bible around today:   King Jmmes Version (KJV), New King James Version (NKJV), New International Version (NIV), American Standard Version (ASV), Revised Standard Version (RSV), The Living Bible (TLB), and on and on.   The best manuscripts we have today were written hundreds of years after the original autographs. What we have are copies of copies of copies. There are differences in the versions we have, some more significant than others, but no differences that effect any of the major truths of the Bible.

Can we trust the Bible we have today?   Is it really God's Word as He gave it to the original writers?

David said, "The words of the Lord are pure" and that they were "purified seven times."   The number seven in scripture speaks of completeness or perfection.   So, the original words were pure, but what about what we have today?   David goes on to say God would preserve His word from "this (his) generation for ever".   The psalmist also said, "Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven". (Psalms 119:89)

Jesus testified to the purity and preservations of the scritpures when He said, "Heaven and earth shall pass away:   But My words shall not pass away."   (Luke 21:33)   He also said, "Thy word is truth".   (John 17:17)

If God chose to reveal Himself through the inspired, written record, then He certainly intended to reveal Himself to this generation - to you and I - through the same written word.   He is God, after all!   If He was able enough and caring enough to give us His word then He is certainly able enough and caring enough to ensure His Word is preserved for all generations.

Choose a version or translation that has stood the test of time and one you are able to understand.   If you find the language of the KJV difficult, then try the NKJV or the NIV.   Read it daily because it is food and life for your soul and spirit   (Psalms 119:11)   Ask the Holy Spirit to make it understandable.   (Psalms 119:18, 34)

Whatever version or translation you use, it is still God's Word.   Believe it and put your faith and confidence in it.   God cares enough for His word - and for you - that He will make sure the words you read are His.
