Exposition on Psalm 121

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills.”

In time of trouble, temptation or blessings, we do not tend to lift our eyes above our circumstances. Instead, in times of trouble, we look down; in times of temptation, we look inward; and in times of blessings, we look around us, comparing ourselves with others and their blessings.   Do we lift up our eyes in whatever state or condition we find ourselves in?

“He watereth the hills from his chambers: The earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works”   (Psalms 104:13)

“From whence cometh my help?”

    Who delivers me from trouble?

“Thou callest in trouble, and I delivered thee”   (Psalms 81:7)

"He shall call upon me; and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him.”   (Psalms 91:15)

Who leads me not into temptation, but delivers me from evil (sin)?

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”   (I Corinthians 10:13)

Who provides my blessings – wisdom, knowledge, favor, shelter, food, clothing, health, well-being, peace?

“My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth”

All of heaven and earth obeys God who is the creator and ruler of heaven and earth and everything in the earth.   (cf Job38-41).   All my sufficiency is from the Lord Who created the heavens and the earth and all that exist in them – the angels, sun, moon, rain, animals, vegetation, birds, sea life, man.   He feeds the birds, makes the grass to grow, commands the sun and moon and knows each star by name.   He is mindful of man and even numbers the hairs on his head.

“He will not suffer thy foot to be moved:   He that keepeth thee will not slumber.”

He will not allow me to waiver of be double-minded or go off course.   He will never weary in watching over me.   He is ever personally vigilant in all my ways and walk.

“Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”

He not only keeps me personally but He keeps me in my community, family and friends.   He guards my influences and my dealings.   He is watchful that peace and hope is a reward of my salvation.

“The Lord is thy keeper:   The Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day nor the moon by night.”

This is the third time the Lord says He is my keeper. He has built a hedge around me, He guards me, attends to my needs, protects me.   He is the strength in whatever I set my hand to do.   My right hand indicates that which is considered my strength and dexterity.   He is the shade (to excise or extirpate, root out, pluck up) upon my strength.   It is His strength since I don’t know how to guard myself and what I am to guard myself against, how to satisfy my needs or how to protect myself.  He provides the faith to trust in Him because He makes me to see the insufficiency of my own strength and the all sufficiency of His strength.   Year by year and month by month, I am in His keeping.   He also keeps me and shields me from idolatry.   He keeps me from the brilliance of pride and guards me from secret sins.

“The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil.   He shall preserve thy soul.”

The Lord is my high tower and my buckler.   He keeps me from the evil of Satan, the world and from men.   He draws out and excises the evil in my nature.   He tests me and refines me until I am made in the perfect image of Christ.   He created me, He formed me, called me to be His own.   He is at work constantly to perfect me and save my soul from damnation.

“The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”

Whatever I do, wherever I go, He watches over me.   He guards my steps and will not allow my feet to stumble or slip.

“Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.”   (Psalms 17:5)

He hedges me about as with thorns so that no one or no thing can come against me in my walk with Him.

“I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and make a wall” (Hosea 2:6)
